Tidal Wave is a 2009 South Korean disaster film directed by Yoon Je-kyoon and starring Sol Kyung-gu, Ha Ji-won, Park Joong-hoon and Uhm Jung-hwa. Announced as South Korea's first disaster film, the film was released in theaters on July 22, 2009 and received more than 11 million submissions across the country.
Located at the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula, the Haeundae district of Busan attracts one million visitors to its beaches each year. The film tells the story of many characters who are caught in a terrible tsunami in which they must make life and death decisions.
Five years ago, Man-sik, a native of Haeundae, lost Yeon-hee's father due to his mistake in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Because of this, he was unable to get involved with Yeon-hee, who runs an unlicensed seafood restaurant, despite his attempts to start a relationship.
Dong-choon and Seung-hyun's grandmother join Seung-hyun and engage in some illegal activities to earn money, but end up being caught by the police. Man-sik finally plans to propose to Yeon-hee.
Geologist Kim Hwi finds his divorced wife, Yoo-jin. Although Yoo-jin has a daughter named Ji-min and a new boyfriend Hae-chan, they decide not to tell their daughter that Hwi is her real father, as they are worried about how she might react.
A wealthy Seoul university student, Hee-mi, accidentally falls off a yacht into the sea. Hyeong-sik, Man-sik's younger brother, is a lifeguard who rescues Hee-mi. Hee-mi is furious at the 'violent' rescue and irritates him for following him and the two begin to fall in love.
Hwi notes that the Sea of Japan (East Sea) is exhibiting activity similar to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The Disaster Prevention Agency assures him that South Korea is not at risk, but a megatsunami soon forms near Japan and starts traveling to Haeundae. Hwi realizes that Haeundae citizens have only 10 minutes to escape. There is a short earthquake (a small aftershock) in Haeundae. The sea begins to recede from the coast, causing mass hysteria as people realize that a tsunami is coming. Thousands of people rush to save their lives, but the tsunami hits Haeundae. Dong-choon, Seung-hyun, his grandmother and others on the Gwangan Bridge are swept away by the sea. A telephone pole collapses, electrocuting everyone in the water, but Man-sik and Yeon-hee survive. Dong-choon wakes up on the bridge, but when he tries and fails to light a cigarette, and subsequently discards the lighter in frustration, he falls into the gas leak from a tanker truck, causing an explosion that splits the bridge in half and sends containers flying on buildings on the coast.
Hyeong-sik jumps out of a rescue helicopter and saves Hee-mi at sea. When Hyeong-sik and the rest of the group are together on the rope, Hyeong-sik realizes that the rope is about to break and only one can climb up to the helicopter. He cuts the rope to which he is connected and falls into the violent sea. The Yoo-jin elevator gets stuck in a flood of water and speaks in tears to his daughter Ji-min on his phone. Yoo-jin is saved by a worker. On the roof, she meets Ji-min and Hwi. The two help their daughter get into a crowded rescue helicopter. Before the helicopter leaves, Hwi tells his daughter that he is really her father. Yoo-jin and Hwi hug each other before being killed.
After the tsunami, there is a funeral for the thousands of dead. Among the dead is Hyeong-sik and Man-sik's uncle. Dong-choon finds out that his mother also died and starts to cry. Many people help to rebuild the city. Man-sik, while cleaning up the ruins of Yeon-hee's restaurant, finds the red ribbon that Yeon-hee said was a 'yes' to her proposal. The film ends with a ruined scene of Haeundae, but in an atmosphere of hope.
