Once Upon a Time in Shanghai is a 2014 Hong Kong-Chinese martial arts film directed by Wong Ching-po and starring Sammo Hung, Philip Ng, and Andy On. Yuen Woo-ping and Yuen Cheung-yan choreographed the action choreography. One Upon a Time in Shanghai is a remake of Chen Kuan-1972 tai's film Boxer from Shantung, in which he also appeared in a supporting role.
Ma Yongzhen (Philip Ng), who has had unusual martial arts skills since childhood, travels from his birthplace to Shanghai in search of work. He encounters rising overlord Lung Chat there (Andy On). After going through trials together, the two young people who both have a dream rapidly become friends and brothers. Since then, the two brothers have worked tirelessly together, fighting innumerable foes and taking down Shanghai's largest triad group, the Axe Gang, in one fell swoop, earning them acclaim across the city. At the same time, Ma enlisted the support of the Iron Leader (Sammo Hung), a former kung fu master, to combat their mutual foe. The Axe Gang was not willing to fail in this manner and has a hatred towards Ma and Lung, as well as a plan to eliminate them. Lung was then assassinated in an unexpected strike. Ma vows to seek vengeance after seeing his brother's death and being powerless to help him.
