When Dominic "Dom" Toretto is taken to Lompoc Prison by bus, his sister Mia Toretto and friend Brian O'Conner lead a prison robbery, causing the bus to crash and freeing Dom. When authorities tracked them down, the trio fled to Rio de Janeiro. Waiting for Dom to arrive, Mia and Brian along with their friend Vince and some others participate in a robbery of three cars being carried on a train. Brian and Mia discover that U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents are also on board the train and that the cars they have stolen are confiscated property. When Dom arrives with other accomplices, he discovers that one of them, Zizi, only wants to rob one car, which is a Ford GT40. Dom lets Mia steal the car himself while he and Brian fight Zizi and his men. During the fight, Zizi killed the agents assigned to take care of the cars. Dom and Brian are arrested and taken to crime boss Hernan Reyes, owner of the cars and Zizi's boss. Reyes orders an interrogation to find the whereabouts of the cars, but Dom and Brian escape and retreat to their hideout.
As Brian, Dom, and Mia are inspecting the car to find out why it's so important, Vince arrives and tries to remove a computer chip from the car. When discovered, he admitted that he was planning to sell the chip to Reyes alone for money. Dom chased Vince away. Brian investigates the chip and discovers that it contains details about Reyes' entire criminal empire, including the location of $100 million worth of cash.
U.S. Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs and his team travel to Rio to capture Dom and Brian. With the help of local police officer Elena Neves, they reach Dom's hideout, but discover that it has been raided by Reyes' men. Brian, Dom and Mia escape; Dom suggests that they split up to leave Rio, but Mia informs her that she is pregnant with Brian. Dom agrees to let the group stay together and suggests that they rob Reyes of money to start a new life. Three people form a team to carry out the robbery, including: Han, Roman Pearce, Tej, Gisele, Leo, and Santos. Vince later returns to join the group after saving Mia from Reyes' men.
Hobbs and his team eventually locate and capture Dom, Mia, Brian, and Vince. When taking them to the airport for extradition to the US, the agency vehicle was attacked by Reyes. Hobbs' entire party is killed; Hobbs and Elena alone are fought back and saved by Dom, Brian, Mia and Vince. However, Vince was wounded and died shortly afterwards. Desperate to avenge his murdered comrade, Hobbs and Elena agree to assist in the heist. The group broke into the police station and removed the safe that was fastened to the building in two cars and dragged it around the city. After being chased by the police, Dom let Brian go on alone while he himself attacked the police and chased Reyes, using the safe being towed behind his car to crash into their convoy. Brian returns to kill Zizi in Reyes, severely wounded after Dom's attack. Hobbs arrives at the scene and kills Reyes. Although Hobbs refuses to let Dom and Brian get away, he gives the two 24 hours to escape on the condition that they leave the safe. However, the safe was empty because it was swapped during the chase. After dividing the money (Vince's share was sent to his wife and children), each went his own way.
On a tropical beach, Brian and Mia, who were pregnant at that time, were sitting and relaxing. Dom and Elena visit them. Brian challenges Dom to one last race, betting to see who is the better driver.
